Sandy Lake man charged with DUI in serious condition

GREENVILLE -- A Mercer County man charged with driving under the influence is listed in serious condition at a Pittsburgh hospital after he lost control of his vehicle on Sunday.

Thomas V. Varner, 49, of Sandy Lake, was driving around a curve on Route 358 in Perry Township when his Buick Skylark veered off the road about 2:47 a.m. After overcorrecting the car back onto the roadway, his car hit a ditch and rolled over, police said.

Varner, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Greenville Medical Center. He was later flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was listed in serious condition Tuesday.
